Why You Need Home Security Products

There are many ways that you can use effective and even inexpensive home security products to help protect your family and property from harm.

Burglary is classified as an unlawful entry into a structure with the intent to commit a felony or theft and accounted for 21.2% of all property related crimes in 2005, according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report.  It is also estimated that homes without security systems are 2.7 times more likely to be targeted by a burglar1, and the average loss due to these crimes is near $1,600 per incident2.

Burglars like an easy target.  They target homes where they think they will have an easy & incident free entry and exit from the property.  They like tall bushes and dark areas where they are unlikely to be seen by neighbors or passersby.  They also do not like to take many chances with making noise or drawing any type of attention to themselves, and they will avoid situations where there is a greater likelihood that they will be caught.

A Pennsylvania survey showed 81 percent of burglars entered a home through the first floor, and that 34% of burglars enter a home directly through the front door, 22% through the back door.  A Connecticut survey also showed that 12 percent gained entry into a home through an unlocked door.  Most of these crimes occur during daylight hours when most people are at work and it is less likely that anyone will be at the home.

The best thing that you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your property is to acquire the right home security products for you.  Any small thing that you do to enhance the security of your home can go a long way toward deterring potential criminals.

Installing home security equipment and enlisting an alarm monitoring company is your best line of defense against home invasion, but there are other less costly ways that you can increase the security of your home.

  • Make sure that all of your doors and windows are securely locked every time you leave your home.  Installing good quality deadbolt locks on all entry doors will make it much harder for a thief to enter.
  • Keep bushes and shrubs well trimmed to leave less cover for a burglar to hide.
  • Maintain good lighting both indoors and outdoors.  Use automatic floodlights where possible around the perimeter of your home.
  • Place a home security sign in your yard and stickers on the windows around your home.  Having a home security company sign in your yard can be just as effective as actually having an alarm system installed.  Burglars cannot know for sure that whether you actually have a monitored alarm system or not.

Just doing a few inexpensive things around your home can greatly enhance your home security.
